Reena is quiet and shy, and she attends one of the best girls' boarding schools in western Kenya. After her father's death, his relatives chased Reena's family away from their home. Reena, her sister, and her mother now live on the outskirts of Kisumu, the biggest city in western Kenya. Her mother supports the family as a vegetable vendor in Kisumu.
